This beautiful bear fetish carving was carved from a piece of pipestone by Zuni artist Herbert Him. The bear stands atop a pueblo dwelling and the back is carved with ear or corn. The carving is attached to a marble base measuring 2 3/8 inches in diameter.

Bear is the guardian of the West and he represents strength and self-knowledge. Bear is a spiritual guide and he also carries within him supernatural powers. Bear is believed to have great healing powers. Bear is considered the most powerful of all of the animals and is one of the most popular subjects of fetish carvers.
