Navajo Tufa Cast Sterling and Turquoise Bola Tie

Wilson Begay

Wilson and Carol Begay have been creating traditional Navajo jewelry since 1969. They came from families well known for jewelry making. Wilson's father, Luke, taught John Adair, author of "Navajo and Pueblo silversmiths" how to make sand cast jewelry. He worked for many years with Mike and Dean Kirk. Carol's parents, Angela and Allen Chee, were both silversmiths who worked for C.G. Wallace. The Begays began their career making sand cast jewelry, a traditional type of Navajo jewelry that requires the artist to carve the jewelry designs in Tufa stone to make a mold in which to pour molten silver. They are well known for their traditional sand cast work. Wilson concentrates on the casting and building the foundations of the jewelry and Carol sets the stones and does the finishing work. oincided with his desire to quit traveling and stay home with his wife Theresa and their children.
